Winter in the Biesbosch Line

From December through February, there is hibernation in the Biesbosch Line. But that doesn't mean there's nothing to do. There is something for everyone: a winter walk, a scavenger hunt or warming up with a hot chocolate or lunch during a beautiful hike. We collected all the activities on this web page.

Winter Wonder Woudrichem

Winter Wonder Woudrichem is the event during the winter months in the picturesque fortified town of Woudrichem. Taste all kinds of delicacies that can be found around the church, on the Kerkstraat and in the Landpoortstraat. The fortified town is filled with Christmas atmosphere by the smell and warmth of crackling fires, mulled wine and Christmas trees.

Date: Saturday, Dec. 14, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Snert walk at Fort Giessen

On December 28 there is a winter snert walk in the surroundings of Fort Giessen. During a 6 km walk you will walk through the Almbos and the Struikwaard. Go out with a guide or alone with a route map. After about 3 km a cup of hot chocolate awaits you. At the end of the walk, delicious pea soup and mulled wine are waiting for you to warm up with.

Winter Wonderland

Orange Association Juliana from Andel is organizing the third edition of Winter Wonderland on Saturday evening, December 14. This atmospheric event offers visitors a magical walking route along the Romboutstoren, accompanied by music.

For families with children ages 0 to 3, the walk starts at 6:30 p.m.. For children ages 4 to 6, it starts at 7 p.m., and for children ages 7 to 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Participants without children or with older children are invited to begin the walk at 8 p.m. At the end of the route, visitors can enjoy an oliebol and a hot drink to end the evening.

Winter city walk

There is nothing like a brisk walk on a beautiful winter day. During this city walk, you'll warm up past the most remarkable spots and monuments in the historic fortified town of Woudrichem.

Classical concerts

The Sleeuwijks Kerkje is known for its small-scale concerts. From up-and-coming talent to professional musicians. The good acoustics and small, intimate space make the Kerkje ideal for chamber music, recitals and solo concerts. This winter there are several types of concerts.

A ticket costs €15 and can be purchased through the website. It is not possible to buy a ticket at the door.

Sail or hike through the Biesbosch

Sail through the narrow Biesbosch creeks in an electric (heated) boat while the skipper guides you, or hike with a guide from the Forestry Commission. Biesbosch MuseumEiland organizes several winter boating and hiking tours in the Biesbosch. Combine it immediately with a museum visit for a real day out.

Fish baking in Woudrichem

Cooperative Fishing Association De Hoop in Woudrichem bakes fish once a month during the winter months. The fish they fry is gurnard and the proceeds go to the maintenance of the fish auction.

Kasteel Dussen

Enjoy special performances at Kasteel Dussen. Theater for adults as well as for children, art lectures and musical performances: bright spots on long, dark winter evenings.

Candlelit tours on Slot Loevestein

During the Christmas vacations Slot Loevestein is illuminated with candles and candle-lit tours are organized, with winter dishes! Enjoy hot chocolate or Glühwein around the brazier, followed by an Old Dutch stew and a tour of the castle led by a professional guide.

Skating in the region

Hopefully it will work this year: skating on natural ice! Is it freezing? Then put your skates on at the natural ice rinks in the fortified town in Woudrichem or Sleeuwijk. But is King Winter absent? Not to worry: then you can go to our neighbors across the street in the fortified town of Gorinchem. There, from December 14, 2024 to January 5, 2025, there will again be an indoor ice rink on the Grote Markt.

Christmas Walk Barge Flan

Come walk on Boxing Day during the VMB's Christmas Walk in partnership with DOCKS Vissershang. Walk 2 or 6 kilometers through the Barge Bay. On the 6 kilometer walk, you'll get a cup of hot chocolate along the way. At the end you can warm up with a hot drink, a cup of pea soup and/or a luxury hot dog. Of course, you can also go for a snack and a drink before and after the walk.

Registration is available on the day between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at DOCKS Vissershang.

Winter fair in Werkendam

On Friday, December 13, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., the center of Werkendam is completely transformed into a classic Christmas atmosphere. Come shopping while enjoying music, street theater, tastings, and especially primal and old Dutch conviviality! There are various activities on the Hoogstraat and a Christmas fox hunt.

Fort Atena in Christmas spirit

Want to learn more about the history of Fort Altena and the beautiful surrounding area? Then sign up for the tour on Dec. 15 while the fort is shrouded in Christmas spirit. The tour starts at 2 p.m. and lasts about 1.5 hours. The cost is €4 for adults and €2 for children (pay cash to the guide). Registration is not necessary.

Food and drink

Winter walks call for warming up along the way, with hot drinks or a hearty meal. For a cup of coffee and cake, or a lunch, for example, go to lunchroomGewoon Ploon. Would you like to dine extensively? That is possible at Restaurant de Stroming. Always check the website for opening hours.

On December 21, there will be "Winterwende Fest" at Zo'ndag Werkendam. Celebrate the shortest night and enjoy coziness, food, drinks and music inside by the stove or outside by the fire pits. A ticket costs €23.50 including a delicious winter meal and snacks. Tickets via this link.
