Hiking Guide

Hiking Guide

Through polders and woods, along rivers, forts and fortresses: in the Biesbosch Line every hiker will find something to his liking. Clear your head in nature or wander through old streets in the fortified town of Woudrichem. Stroll along forts and casemates through the line landscape of the Dutch Waterline (Unesco World Heritage) and enjoy the beauty that the Biesbosch Line has to offer.

With the hiking guide and on this page we give you an insight into the hiking possibilities of the Biesbosch Line.

Hiking trails

Haven't finished hiking after the routes from the hiking guide? On the route page you will find many more walking routes. Walk for example 'Rondje Meeuwen' where you walk through the polder and along the Bergsche Maas. Along the way you will come across numerous benches and picnic areas. You can also visit Witte molen. On Saturday afternoons (and whenever it is running) the mill is open and you are welcome to visit.

So there are dozens of other trails where there is also plenty to do. We wish you lots of hiking fun!

Unesco World Heritage Site

Since August 2021, the Biesbosch Line may call itself a World Heritage Site. The New Dutch Waterline runs through four provinces and is a unique defense system. It is a strip of land that can be flooded. This layer of water protected against invaders. Forts and fortresses were erected at the weak spots. Most of these are still intact and can be visited. Walk through Unesco World Heritage Sites!

Fortified Town Triangle

An active day sniffing culture

The Fortified Town Triangle is the area between the fortresses of Gorinchem, Woudrichem, Zaltbommel, Slot Loevestein and Fort Vuren. Visit five fortresses in three provinces in one day! The Vestingdriehoek is not only worth visiting for its forts and fortresses, the river landscape is great for walking.

Natural areas

Walk through natural areas

The Biesbosch Line is rich in natural areas. Stichting Brabants Landschap, Stichting Altenatuur, Staatsbosbeheer and some private individuals take care of this beautiful landscape and the - sometimes rare - animals and plants that live there. Put on your walking shoes and marvel at all the beauty that the nature of Altena has to offer.

Walk around the Biesbosch

Discover our beautiful Biesbosch on a brisk walk. Stroll through the Pannekoek, spot water buffalo and visit the Biesbosch MuseumEiland where you can learn all kinds of things about how we coexisted and lived with water. From the first origins after the Sint Elisabethflood to smuggling routes in World War II, it's all covered in the exhibits.

Food & drink

We can imagine that during or after a walk you have felt like something tasty. Also in this you have plenty of choice in our region. Have a nice lunch at SIS Lunch Boutique, drink a special beer at beer brewery De Magistraat (do this after your walk ;)) or dine at restaurant Proeflokaal Den Dijk.

Here is a list of all restaurants in the area. Always check the location's website for opening hours.

Would you like to enjoy all the beauty that the Biesboschlinie has to offer for longer and get away from it all? Then book an overnight stay in the Biesboschlinie. You are most welcome!
