The Biesbosch Line is a region full of cultural heritage. There is a lot to discover: from casemate and fortified town to mill and museum.

The heritage tells of a history in which people and water were alternately each other's ally and enemy. Thriving fisheries, great floods, as well as the water as a defense against outside invaders; you can find it all in the many historical sites in this region.

Fortified town of Woudrichem

Visit the cozy fortified town of Woudrichem. The fortified town is still completely intact. But the Gevangenenpoort, the Martinustoren and the historic harbor are also worth a visit. Stroll around, take a city walk on your own or visit the fortified town with a city guide.

Slot Loevestein

Visit the famous castle from which Hugo the Great escaped in a book chest. Learn all about the castle, its inhabitants and their lives between the centuries-old castle walls. Tip! Especially during school vacations, Loevestein organizes numerous special activities for children.

Museums

Culture hungry, saddle sore or rain? Then visit a museum in the Biesbosch Line. Lovers of nature, old crafts and history and even car enthusiasts are in for a treat.

Mills Mühle in der Region Biesbosch

When it turns it is open

Every Saturday afternoon, provided there is sufficient wind, and at all other times when the sails are turning, you can visit the mills in Altena. Every miller will proudly tell you about "his" mill: was it used for drainage, is it a water mill or traditional corn mill? Be sure to take a look in the mill stores, where traditionally ground baking products are for sale.

Fortified Town Triangle

Can't get enough of fortresses and castles? Then don't skip the Vestingdriehoek. The fortified town triangle is formed by the fortified towns of Woudrichem, Gorinchem and Zaltbommel, Fort Vuren and Slot Loevestein. By ferry and bicycle you can visit these locations within one day.

New Dutch Waterline

In the Biesbosch Line you will find the southernmost part of the of the New Dutch Waterline. Numerous forts, locks and casemates are still part of the river landscape. All but one of them can be visited.
