Hiking in the Biesbosch Line

Hiking

Through polders and woods, along rivers, forts and fortresses: in the Biesbosch Line every hiker will find something to his liking. Clear your head in nature or wander through old streets in the fortified town of Woudrichem. Stroll along forts and casemates, experience an exciting adventure during a treasure hunt or walk across farmland with the routes of the Agrarische Natuur Vereniging.

Walking in nature

If you like nature walks, then hiking in De Biesbosch Altena is of course obvious. But did you know that Altena has many more beautiful natural areas to walk in? Stroll through the old duck decoy Het Pompveld or wander through the floodplains along the Maas or Merwede rivers. The local nature conservation organization has an overview of all nature areas on their website.
Tip: also great fun is the Duyls Bos. If the gate is open, you are welcome.

Fancy a picnic? Hike past picnic spots and buy your meal along the way at a farm store, or scavenge your own meal at one of the orchards or picking gardens. You'll find all these walks in our guide to Pick & Picnic Routes.

Walking along fort and fortified town

Long-distance hikes

For culture nerds

Forts and fortresses, casemates and locks; the Biesbosch Line has a rich history. This history has been beautifully preserved in, for example, the fortified town of Woudrichem or Slot Loevestein.

Also be sure to visit the New Dutch Waterline: we now have UNESCO World Heritage status.

For sturdy walk-throughs

Fancy a brisk walk? Right across the Biesbosch Line area runs the New Dutch Waterline. The Waterliniepad is a long-distance walk along all the forts and fortresses of this line. And one of the stages starts in Woudrichem!
