MONUMENTS

DUSSEN

Kasteel Dussen, Within 1

In the late 14th century, the original "donjon," a four-story residential tower, was expanded into a castle by various descendants of the van der Dussen family. In the course of time, the castle changed hands regularly and various (noble) families added floors, additions and extensions and a Tuscan colonnade. Over the centuries the castle has suffered many misfortunes, the lowest being the St. Elisabeth flood and various wars. From 1954 to 1997 the castle served as the town hall, after which it came into the hands of Monuments Fund Brabant.

Mansion, Inside 34

The beautiful mansion was personally built in 1860 by city councilman/carpenter/contractor Kasper Haspels. Later residents, including notary Rietstra and doctor Van Vuure, had various renovations and adjustments made. The Binnen was once rich in monumental buildings. 't Can Verkeere, as the motto above the front door of Binnen 34 reads, speaks volumes in this regard.

BABYLONIËNBROEK

T farmhouse, Hillsestraat 6 - 8

Beautiful farm of the so-called Altenase transverse section type from the 2nd half of the 19th century. Located on a mound, this national monument is rich in characteristic features for this type of farmhouse, such as the front door frame, a hipped roof on the living area and a gable roof on the barn, the six-pane windows and the hand-formed brick.

Short-gabled farmhouse, Hillsestraat 4

Also a farm of the Altena cross-part type from the 19th century. However, this is not a T-farm, but a short-gabled farmhouse with a pitched roof. Above the barn doors, in order to gain height, the roof is "pitched.

T farmhouse, Broeksestraat 77

Built on a mound, this middle-length type farmhouse dates from the 18th/19th century. The walls are built of ijssel bricks, the racks above the windows are made of red brick.

OUTDOOR

Stool house 'The Heuvelhoeve', Heulstraat 5

A stool house or stool house farmhouse is actually a T-farm with the living area extended to create an L-shape. The Heuvelhoeve, with its distinctive steps and decorative vases at the entrance, dates from 1750.

T farmhouse, Eng 2

The oldest original elements of this beautiful farmhouse date back to the early 17th century, perhaps even the late 16th century. The original farmhouse was probably of the Hallehuist type with an extended upstairs room. Only the upstairs room, the cellar and the farm area have been preserved; traces of soot on the wooden rafters in the barn suggest that the remaining parts were destroyed by fire. The refined details of, for example, the upstairs room construction make it plausible that the farmhouse was commissioned by a very wealthy family.

ALMKERK

Stool house 'Clootwijckhoeve', Woudrichemseweg 38

The original homestead that stood on this site dates back to 1418 and was completely destroyed during the St. Elisabeth Flood in 1421. Already in 1460 the first parts were rebuilt, but the current front part of this farm dates from 1618, the rear part was realized in 1797. In 1980, the Clootwijckhoeve underwent a major renovation.

'Jagershof,' Uppelsehoek 26

This beautiful L-shaped on a mound (residential) farmhouse dates from the 2nd half of the 19th century and is one of many examples of well-preserved heritage on the Uppelsehoek.

Villa farmhouse, Uppelsehoek 17

Behind the substantial hedge is a mansion dating from 1880. The architectural style of the mansion is referred to as eclectic, indicating that in terms of detailing it "borrowed" from various other (old) architectural styles. The conservatory was added in 1930. The original barn was demolished and replaced.

T farmhouse, Provincial Road South 65

In a somewhat obscure bend (tip: get off and walk down the country road a bit) stands this farmhouse from the 19th century. The bricks used, the partially roofed facades, the windows with small rods and the tree of life above the front door are characteristic of the region and the type of farmhouse. From the country lane you not only have a good view of the beautiful back, but you can also catch a glimpse of the Kornsche Boezem and the characteristic mill.

Here the dike merges into the "Korn," an old sea dike.

Left and right you will find numerous iconic farmhouses, including 9 national monuments. One fact: the land to the right of the dike (towards the west) is sea clay, a legacy of St. Elisabeth, the other side is river clay.

DUSSEN

Cross-shaped farmhouse, Muilkerk 28

You will also find numerous beautifully restored farmhouses on the Muilkerk. The cross-shaped farmhouse at No. 28, built in the 2nd half of the 18th century, is a fine example. The sash windows have a varied division, both a twelve-, sixteen- and twenty-pane division occur.

NATURAL AREAS

BABYLONIA PANTS

Pompveld

In the early 1960s this region was almost smoothed out by large-scale land consolidation, a disaster for nature and landscape. Only one small polder escaped.

The Pompveld is about 240 acres, a reserve of wet meadows, willows and poplar forests, an oasis of peace and quiet. The Pompveld is not freely accessible, but you can walk around the Pompveld (6 km). With a little luck, you will see roe deer, hawks or egrets during that walk. Who you certainly won't see is the mud creeper hiding in the water. Centrally located in the Pompveld, a historic duck decoy is maintained where professional decoy workers work during open days.

DUSSEN

Kornsche Boezem

With about 40 hectares, this is a more intimate nature reserve with many similarities to the Pompveld. It is an old basin area that used to serve as a buffer for excess water from the polders. To preserve nature, the water level is kept artificially high. Local residents call the nature reserve "the little Biesbosch. On Saturday afternoon, the Noordeveldsemolen (on the northeast side of this nature reserve) is open for visits. The Kornsche Boezem is freely accessible.

Duyls Bos

This is a forest with more! The Duyl forest is a gem yet to be discovered. You easily bike or walk past it without ever knowing what lurks among the trees.
