5 years of Altena

The municipality of Altena exists five years and that deserves to be celebrated! We developed, in cooperation with local organizations, a beautiful booklet with five new routes especially for the first lustrum. One route takes you to the war history of the region, another takes you past entrepreneurs offering delicious local products. There is a cycling route, gnome route for children and a 'Tourist in your own region' route.

Get to know our vast polder landscapes, meandering dikes, watery floodplains, harbors, Biesbosch, monumental buildings and the coziness and rich history of 21 village centers.

Tourist in your own region

Discover the hidden treasures

You discover the Netherlands by bicycle! But strangely enough, we only do that when we visit other regions. At home, we use the bicycle mainly functionally: on our way to school, work or for shopping.

Be surprised and play tourist in your own community! Visit the clog maker, find out where he gets his wood and enjoy the beautiful landscape you cycle through. You are guaranteed to get a whole new perspective on your living environment.

Gnome Trail Almbos

Investigate and find the gnome children's nuggets

One day, Gnome Clogmaker was hard at work with a large order of gnome clogs in all kinds of cheerful colors. It was gnome school vacation and his children were bored. He made some extra nuggets and decided to set out a fun route in the forest for his children and their friends so they would have something fun to do. He marked the route with the brightly colored nuggets and at each stop he made up an assignment. The assignments were fun and educational for the gnome children; after all, they must be very good at running, recognizing trees and knowing a lot about the environment. The children spent the entire vacation playing in nature, and Gnome Clogmaker was finally able to finish his work.

The gnome vacation is over, but the route is still there, for another vacation. And good news, the kids in Altena get to use the trail all year, too. Will you join us?

In cooperation with Brabant Landscape.

Visible past

Traces of World War II

Altena is part of Unesco World Heritage Hollandse Waterlinies. In the landscape, the forts, the fortified town of Woudrichem and the many casemates are clearly visible traces of a military past. But did you know that World War II also left its mark on the landscape? Much less visible, but once you know, you can't ignore it. On these bike tours, you'll discover the less visible traces of the war, and get to know personal stories that took place here. Learn about line-crossers and Merwede hostages, and did you know that several planes crashed in Altena during the war?

Tasty region

Taste the meal of tomorrow

The island of Altena is rich in nature and culture, but also has a thriving countryside, with a large and innovative agricultural and agri-food sector. Together with this sector, the municipality is working towards "the meal of tomorrow. It is healthily produced, sustainably grown and comes from the farmer to your plate without waste. During this bicycle tour you will get to know all the beauty that our farmers have to offer - both beautiful regional products and beautiful landscapes. We will also show you some initiatives where you can see, taste and experience the meal of tomorrow.
