Iberia, a musical Triptych in Kasteel Dussen

October 16 at 20:00

Lecture on music history by Pieter A. Bakker

Music historian Pieter A. Bakker leads you on a brief exploration of Spain's rich music history: from Montserrat and Santiago de Compostela through Madrid to Andalucía.

Spain's musical history has long been hidden behind the Pyrenees and was (is) little known even among many Spaniards. Spanish musical culture is, upon closer listening, much more than flamenco or guitar. To give a hint, this lecture will feature a "musical triptych" with music from the Middle Ages, 18th and 20th centuries.

We explore northern Spain through the Camino, the iconic pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela: what did walkers hear as they walked westward from Catalonia to Galicia in places like Burgos and León in the Middle Ages, during the time of troubadours and the struggle against the Moorish "Al-Andalus"?

In the second part of the lecture, we will stop in Madrid and its surroundings, where Luigi Boccherini musically evokes the nightlife and Joaquin Rodrigo guides us through the gardens of Aranjuez with magical sounds.

Finally, we descend to the deep south, to where Arab culture was once celebrated. Beautiful echoes of this can be heard in works by grandmasters such as Isaac Albéniz and Manuel De Falla who were greatly inspired by images and colors of Andalucía.
